Exploring executive coaching for the first time? Here are some short answers to common questions and links to more information.

There’s no standardized definition for this but it generally involves one-on-one work with a seasoned professional to develop additional leadership skills, more effective communication, and strategies to help you advance your career.

My approach to executive coaching for women is intensely practical. You can use what I teach you the next day on the job. I’m also unique in the executive coaching world because of my long academic career.

I’m the Director of Strategic Communication & Leadership at Maryville University. I’ve spent more than 20 years steeped in the best academic research around topics like gender bias in the workplace, non-verbal communication skills, and so much more that will directly impact your ability to navigate the toughest parts of your work life as an executive woman.

Executive coaching can range from one-time intensive workshops for a specific goal or challenge all the way to a regular, long-term mentoring relationship that addresses many facets of your communication skills and executive presence.

I come to my clients with curiosity and empathy — not a program or preset formula for success. From the start, we work together to set goals and expectations that work for you. Read more about my executive coaching process and packages.

As with most niche industries, there’s a huge range in cost. Most executive coaches charge somewhere between $200 and $500 an hour. The most specialized and sought-after executive coaches can charge more than $1,000 an hour. 

My standard rate is $250 an hour and I offer three different executive coaching for women packages that are tailored for different budgets, goals, and levels of commitment. I also offer discounts for students and select clients — let’s talk about your unique situation.

Sometimes, when I’m summarizing my executive coaching work, I say that I help people make deeper, authentic connections by improving their nonverbal communication, improving their executive presence, and becoming more persuasive.

But each of those things can mean something different for women in the workplace.

Most of the skills and strategies I teach are tailored specifically for empowering women who are facing persistent inequities in pay, unfair penalties for prioritizing motherhood and family commitments, toxic work environments and relationships — with men and women — and other challenges and constraints that come with being a woman in professions that still privilege men in subtle and overt ways.

As much as I love working one-on-one with executive coaching clients, there’s something magical about group learning experiences. When you have the chance to see it really isn’t just you — many or even most women struggle on some level with being heard, respected, and taken seriously in their role — that’s powerful. 

I’ve conducted large virtual workshops for Fortune 500 companies and hundreds of participants. And I’ve led intimate gatherings on specialized topics for a handful of women at non-profit organizations. It’s always a gift to be invited as a keynote speaker on dispelling stereotypes, crisis communication, or fostering more authentic connection through communication skills.
